Coding agents
Gartner's first Magic Quadrant for coding agents
Anthropic, Cursor, GitHub and OpenAI share the Leaders box. The firm expects the IDE to become optional for most teams.
On 20 May 2026, Gartner published the first edition of its Magic Quadrant for enterprise AI coding agents. Four vendors are named Leaders: Anthropic (Claude Code), Cursor, GitHub and OpenAI (Codex). Alibaba Cloud, with Qoder, is among the Challengers.
The figures cited
- GitHub reports 4.7 million seats, up 75% year over year.
- Cursor has more than 50,000 customer organisations.
- Codex has more than 4 million weekly users.
The IDE is no longer the centre
The report comes with striking planning assumptions: by 2027, over 65% of teams using agentic coding will treat the IDE as optional; by 2028, over 70% of enterprise engineers will rely on agents. Gartner also lists native MCP support as a mandatory capability.
These are planning assumptions, not certain predictions: read them as a direction, not a date.
