OpenAI and ServiceNow bring ChatGPT closer to enterprise workflows
OpenAI and ServiceNow expand their partnership: a ChatGPT plugin is available, while Codex integration and security tools are planned for 2027.
Could an employee investigate an IT incident, examine its context and update its record without leaving ChatGPT? That is one use case envisioned by OpenAI and ServiceNow, which announced an expanded partnership on October 28. The companies want to connect OpenAI models and agents with ServiceNow workflows spanning IT support, security and application development (OpenAI).
One piece is available today: the ServiceNow MCP plugin in the OpenAI marketplace. Other announced features, including a Codex integration and a cybersecurity solution, are planned for 2027. The agreement builds on a collaboration expanded in January 2026; it is not an entirely new partnership (ServiceNow, January).
ChatGPT as an entry point to ServiceNow
ServiceNow provides a platform for managing enterprise processes such as IT requests, incidents and security operations. The announced plugin aims to bring some of that context into ChatGPT and enable actions on ServiceNow records from a conversation.
OpenAI's example involves an IT team finding similar incidents, assessing the risk of a change and updating a record. Customers connect ChatGPT to their own ServiceNow instance and choose which capabilities to offer; actions remain subject to the organization's ServiceNow rules and permissions through Action Fabric (OpenAI).
This does not mean ChatGPT automatically gains access to every record or can change anything. Effective access depends on the connection and organizational configuration. The companies also describe a richer interactive experience for on-call teams, but that belongs to their planned extensions, not to a confirmed general release (ServiceNow).
Codex, security and voice: what is planned
The partnership spans several projects. The dates below are the companies' announced expectations and may change.
| Feature | Announced use | Announced availability |
|---|---|---|
| ServiceNow MCP plugin | Access ServiceNow workflows from ChatGPT | Available; enhanced capabilities expected by end of 2026 |
| Security | Combine OpenAI cyber capabilities with ServiceNow asset and access context | Early access in January 2027; general availability planned for Q2 2027 |
| Voice | Describe an AI use case to help fill out a risk assessment | Q1 2027 |
| Codex in AI Workflow Factory | Help build apps using ServiceNow context and platform capabilities | During 2027 |

For developers, the clearest announcement is the planned Codex integration with AI Workflow Factory. The aim is to help build applications using ServiceNow's business context and platform capabilities. OpenAI models are also expected to power Build Agent and Autonomous Engineer. The companies do not disclose pricing or a more precise Codex release date in this announcement, so it would be premature to assume customers can use that integration today.
The planned security solution combines OpenAI cyber capabilities with information about a company's assets and access to help identify and prioritize risks. The announcement describes an intended product and timeline, but provides no independent results establishing its effectiveness.
Each company plans to use the other's tools
ServiceNow plans to give all employees access to ChatGPT Work and Codex, beyond its engineering organization. It also plans to use OpenAI capabilities in its internal security work. OpenAI says it uses ServiceNow workflows in its operations; ServiceNow describes a broader deployment planned at OpenAI (OpenAI; ServiceNow).
These are two different developments: a commercial partnership between platforms and adoption of their products within their own organizations. Neither announcement alone establishes a measured productivity gain or how many employees already use the tools.
Why the partnership matters
An AI conversation can become more useful when it has the relevant context and can help act in the software where work is tracked. For an IT team, finding an incident's history and updating its record in one place could reduce interface switching. Actual value will depend on the quality of retrieved information, permissions, action controls and the time needed to verify results.
ServiceNow also announced an alliance of partners around its AI governance platform. It lists both OpenAI and Anthropic among founding members: the OpenAI partnership is part of a wider ecosystem, and the announcement does not describe a general exclusivity agreement (ServiceNow).
Our take: the available plugin offers an early look at the integration; the security, voice and development features remain to be assessed when they become available. For customers, the decisive questions will be required permissions, action traceability, pricing and reliability on their own workflows. The announcements reviewed do not specify prices for those future features.
