Apple puts Alibaba's Qwen inside the China iPhone's AI, arriving with iOS 27.3 in December
Apple and Alibaba say Qwen will power some Apple Intelligence features in mainland China. What is confirmed, what the press reports, and what nobody has said yet.
As of November 2, 2026, Apple and Alibaba have announced that Alibaba's Qwen model will power some Apple Intelligence features in mainland China. Testing starts in the iOS 27.3 developer beta on November 4, and the public launch comes with iOS 27.3 in December, on a day not yet given. It is the first Apple Intelligence launch in China. We read press coverage, not Apple's announcement itself.
The essentials
- What is announced: Qwen in Apple Intelligence in mainland China, beta November 4, public launch in December.
- Where Qwen steps in: some Siri requests, Compose, and Visual Intelligence questions.
- What is left out: the rebuilt Siri and other next-generation features.
- What stays open: Qwen version, device or cloud, data shared.
What did Apple and Alibaba announce?
Apple posted a notice on its China site on October 31, 2026, and Alibaba confirmed it (The Apple Post, The Next Web, Xinhua). Apple says Apple Intelligence rests on its own models; Qwen is a partner for specific experiences. Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said Qwen will bring "new AI-powered service experiences to Chinese users" (Xinhua).
The developer beta starts on November 4, 2026; the public release with iOS 27.3 comes in December, no day given. In July, the Chinese regulator had listed Apple's generative AI among approved services.

Where exactly does Qwen step in?
Press reports name three places. In Siri, some requests, such as broader knowledge questions, can go to Qwen. In Writing Tools, Compose with Qwen creates text, and per Alibaba images too. In Visual Intelligence, Qwen answers questions about photos, documents and PDFs. Sign-in is with a Qwen account or Sign in with Apple.
Qwen is not the brain of Siri: Siri may hand it certain requests. Per Data Studios, Live Translation, Clean Up, Genmoji, summaries and Type to Siri use Apple's own models. Apple's CEO has said it does not want to ship AI for AI's sake ([our article on John Ternus](/articles/john-ternus-apple-no-ai-for-ais-sake/)).

Who is eligible, and on what terms?
Per Alibaba (Xinhua), the service is for users who buy an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone in China, or whose device location and Apple account region are both China. Users choose to turn on the integration and what to share. Alibaba says it does not use queries or generated responses to train its models.
Press device lists vary (iPhone 16 and later, 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone Air; one names an unidentified iPhone Duo). Siri and the device must use English or Simplified Chinese. Other platforms follow after approvals, Apple says.
What is reported, not confirmed?
Per Bloomberg (via MacTrast), Image Playground and the new Genmoji would also be excluded, and model updates would need government approval. Per SCMP, also via MacTrast, China's industry ministry granted network permits for Qwen and Alibaba's image model Tongyi Wanxiang. Reuters, via Hardware Busters, reported the July list; a source said Baidu would also have a role, unconfirmed. Professor Wang Xiaojie told Xinhua it is the first time a major global maker builds a Chinese model into its system AI in China: an opinion, not a fact.
What is not established?
The coverage we read does not say: the Qwen version; what runs on the device or in the cloud (Private Cloud Compute is not mentioned); what data Alibaba receives when Siri passes on a request; whether Qwen is free or limited; whether it can be switched off separately; the December date; or an official device list. Apple's availability page still marked most features unavailable in China on November 1 (Data Studios).
